How to Support the Black Lives Matter Movement
Posted on Jun 26, 2020 10:00am PDT
Greetings, WAAL Members and Supporters:
As we previously stated in our
statement on police brutality and the Black Lives Matter movement, we have an obligation and responsibility as lawyers, judges, professors, public officials, students and advocates to illuminate the injustices in the legal system, to advocate for reform, and to effect change. We encourage you to join WAAL in our efforts to support the movement by doing the following:
- Become a legal observer! Watch the Legal Observer/Know Your Rights Training hosted by WAAL and the ACLU of Wisconsin HERE.
- Donate to and support local and national organizations. A list of organizations that you can support can be found here: Organizations to Support. WAAL will regularly update this list.
- Email the Milwaukee Fire and Police Commission Chair and former WAAL President Steven DeVougas with policy ideas for police reform in the City of Milwaukee. Email Chairman Steven DeVougas at sdevou@milwaukee.gov. (Note: Emails to Chairman DeVougas are subject to public records law.)
- Refer Black attorneys to persons needing legal assistance. A directory of WAAL attorneys can be found HERE.
- Support and sign the University of Wisconsin Law School and Marquette University Law School's Black Law Students Association (BLSA) petition to their respective law school administrations HERE.
