WAAL LEGAL CLINICS

LEGAL CLINIC AT PATHFINDERS MILWAUKEE

In partnership with the State Bar of Wisconsin, the Wisconsin Association of African-American Lawyers hosts a pro bono legal clinic on select dates at Pathfinders Milwaukee. Volunteer attorneys meet with and consult with individuals on criminal law issues, and landlord/tenant law issues.

Pathfinders Milwaukee empowers youth confronted by homelessness, crisis, or trauma to be safe and connected in order to develop a path towards self-sufficiency, healthier families, and a stronger community.

For questions, contact WAAL Community Outreach Director Amber Raffeet August at waalawyers@gmail.com. For legal assistance, contact Pathfinders Milwaukee.

EXPUNGEMENT LEGAL CLINIC

On June 2, 2018, the Wisconsin Association of African-American Lawyers hosted its first expungement legal clinic in collaboration with the Urban League of Greater Madison, Foley & Lardner, LLP, Madison Area Urban Ministry, Legal Action of Wisconsin, and the State Bar of Wisconsin. Volunteer attorneys met with individuals convicted of low-level felonies and misdemeanors and helped determine if their offenses can be removed or expunged from their records.

To volunteer at a expungement legal clinic, contact WAAL Madision Liaison Alexander Lodge at waalawyers@gmail.com. For legal assistance, contact Urban League of Greater Madison.

TIPPING THE SCALES PROGRAM

Tipping the Scales is a partnership between the Wisconsin Association of African-American Lawyers, Alliant Energy, Perkins Coie, and Madison East High School. The program sends diverse, local attorneys into the classroom for a 50-minute discussion with students. The goal is not for students to walk away with a fulsome knowledge of the law, but to recognize that being a lawyer starts with being able to ask questions and evaluate an issue using multiple lenses. Lesson plans will be provided to volunteers and cover a wide range of engaging topics, including freedom of speech, cyberbullying, voter registration, the DREAM Act, and many more. We hope you find a topic that inspires you. The lesson plans will provide substantive guidance and contain all materials needed for the 50-minute class, though instructors are encouraged to adapt and evolve with class discussion. More about the program can be found here.

SCHOOL CAREER DAYS

Members of the Wisconsin Association of African-American Lawyers regularly visit schools to participate in career day. If you are interested in having a member of WAAL attend and participate in career day at your school, contact us at waalawyers@gmail.com.

YWCA COSTUME DRIVE

In support of the children of YWCA Madison, the Wisconsin Association of African-American Lawyers hosts a Halloween Costume Drive each October. WAAL collects new and gently used Halloween costumes so that the children of YWCA could particpate in Downtown Madison's Family Halloween celebration.
